They found a most unusual sight - a small village, deep in the dungeon. Their foes were swiftly overcome, and they pressed onwards. Will and Goghwim discussed whether or not to taste them, but were dissuaded by the rest of the group and by an encounter with a giant and its lizard pets. The caves were home to that staple of deep places underground - luminescent fungi. The junction between the two regions was marked by ectoplasmic tentacles reaching out in futility towards the caves. (Goghwim came closest, but wedged his spear into the tunnel to stop the burrow of the bulette).Īfter the bulette tunnels, they reached caves formed from the scales of a koru behemoth.

They travelled through bare earthen tunnels for some time, which Brugh recognised as bulette-carved - and he also sensed the taint of Derro in the area! This didn't let them avoid an ambush by three bulettes, but they were able to stop the beasts from carrying anyone off. They decided to heed the Doorkeeper, and headed into the level it had referred to as 'the Midden'. As they headed down the long stairway that Brugh and Nuin remembered led straight to the hydra laid, a raw earthen passage opened off to the side. The Doorkeeper then challenged them with a mighty and mind-bending riddle** before letting them pass. Nonetheless, it was likely to connect to other levels of the dungeon, providing an alternative route in. He explained that one of the levels of the dungeon wasn't subject to the Stone Thief's powers and hung around like a withered limb. The Doorkeeper also 'accidentally' mentioned that they could take an alternative route via the Stone Thief's 'embarrassing little problem' and avoid the Gauntlet. The Doorkeeper also mentioned the Butcher boasting about acquiring a new pet from a swamp, which led to a discussion about what horrific swamp denizen lay in wait. While the Butcher let Grommash and his orcs through, he wouldn't let the party through unhindered. The Doorkeeper chatted with them, and warned them that the Mad Burcher (custodian of the Gauntlet level) held a nasty grudge against them for escaping last time. When they reached the lair of the Doorkeeper, he was very happy to see people (apart from orcs, anyway*) for the second time. The orcs and goblins were very surprised to meet them, but Goghwim convinced the leader of the orcs (a shaman named Grommash) that he was here as a representative of the Orc Lord, and Grommash agreed to lead them to Warlord Fangrot in the Deep Keep. Glorta and Goghwim went forward to talk to them, taking Brugh along as muscle in case things went south.

They headed onwards, past the chamber were Glorta had been 'recruited' and snuck past the slumbering ghouls. They avoided a fight when Brugh opened the door's lock using his metallurgical powers. The first room they entered was much as before, though the gargoyles were ones stolen from Santa Cora and the wraiths were replced with undead guards from the same city. The group were reuinited by the lingering teleportation spell, but not before Will was delivered of a legacy - magical axe left to him by his former commander.

Glorta and Goghwim wowed the bars of Port Shadow (Goghwim even won a magic harp in a music competition!), while Brugh found an outpost of the Mithril Order and crafted up a full set of armbands of healing for everyone.
